Integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) recorded third-quarter net income of P2.4 billion, up 66% from P1.5 billion a year earlier, as stronger power earnings and lower noncash charges more than offset weaker coal operating performance.
For the first nine months of 2026, consolidated net income grew by 11%, from P9.9 billion to P11.0 billion, with power accounting for 78% of total earnings.
Q3 Power Operating Results
The power segment contributed P2.6 billion to consolidated third-quarter earnings, compared with P1.3 billion last year, more than offsetting losses from the coal segment.
Total power sales increased by 5%, from 1,327 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 1,388 GWh, supported by improved plant performance. Bilateral contracts accounted for 54% of total electricity sold, while the remaining 46% was sold through the spot market.
Overall average selling price rose by 26%, from P4.17/KWh to P5.27/KWh, reflecting higher spot market prices.
During the period, average Luzon-Visayas spot prices surged by 85%, from Php3.51/kWh to Php6.50/kWh, as electricity demand growth outpaced available supply, amid elevated fuel costs and line congestions in the Visayas grid.
As of September 30, 2026, contracted capacity represented 45% of SMPC’s 860 MW dependable capacity. After accounting for station service requirements, 400 MW remained available for spot market sales.
Coal Operating Results
The coal segment contributed P110 million in net losses, reflecting lower shipments and elevated production costs, including fuel.
Coal production fell by 5% to 3.6 million metric tons (MMT), from 3.8 MMT, amid limited production at the Acacia mine and near-depletion of the Narra mine.
Shipments declined by 25%, from 3.6 MMT to 2.7 MMT, with domestic power, cement and industrial plants accounting for 85% of total sales.
During the quarter, the Indonesian Coal Index 4 (ICI4) rose by 62%, from US$42.1/MT to US$68.1/MT, supported by Indonesian supply constraints and elevated LNG prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Average selling price for Semirara coal increased by 22%, slower than ICI4, from P2,249 per metric ton to P2,749 per metric ton, with a larger share of non-commercial-grade coal sold. ### About SMPC:
