Voluntary suspension of mining and export operations of Taganito Mining Corporation and Hinatuan Mining Corporation in April 2020
Background/Description of the Disclosure
Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) discloses that Taganito Mining Corporation (TMC), its subsidiary operating in Claver, Surigao del Norte, has voluntarily suspended its mining and export operations effective 7 April 2020 , and Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC), its subsidiary operating in Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte, will voluntarily suspend its mining and export operations effective on 9 April 2020 . The voluntary suspension of mining and export operations both TMC and HMC will be until 30 April 2020 . While in NAC’s previous disclosure last 6 April 2020 it indicated that mining operations would continue pursuant to Province of Surigao del Norte Memorandum Order No. 20-124, TMC and HMC’s decision was made in response to the further plea of the local provincial and municipal governments to defer their operations to prevent an increased risk of entry and transmission of Covid-19 in the province and the municipalities. TMC will , however, continue to transport and deliver its existing limonite stockpiles to Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation's mineral processing plant located adjacent to TMC’s mine site during the suspension of operations to reduce environmental risks of TMC . During the temporary suspension, TMC and HMC shall each maintain a skeleton workforce to protect, maintain and secure its premises and assets, and continue to enforce the necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of its employees. While the temporary suspension of operations will adversely affect TMC and HMC's ore exports for the month of April, upon resumption of their operations every effort to recover will be made by TMC and HMC by making necessary adjustment to their respective operations. NAC's other mining subsidiaries, Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation, which operates in Bataraza, Palawan and Cagdianao Mining Corporation, which operates in Dinagat Islands, remain operational while observing health and safety protocols to ensure that the health and safety of their employees are not compromised and to minimize the risk of COVID-19 within their respective communities.
