PGMC clarifies inaccurate article and adheres to responsible mining

Background/Description of the Disclosure

On March 31, 2021, an online article entitled, “Digging for profits: Who owns PH mines?” was posted on https://pcij.org/. The article read in part:

“PGMC was the biggest earner among the mining companies ordered closed or suspended by the late Environment Secretary Regina “Gina” Lopez in February 2017. Many of them were able to continue operations while their permits went under review.”

PGMC strongly denies the author’s inaccurate claim that it was among the companies ordered closed or suspended by the former secretary. The records of both the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) would show that PGMC has never been issued an order of closure or suspension. Nor has PGMC received any such order. Hence, it has not stopped its mining operations.

The MGB issues a certification every year attesting that the Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA-007-92-X) operated by PGMC is “valid and existing.” The DENR even renewed the MPSA for another 25 years on June 21, 2016.

As a testament to its adherence to responsible mining, PGMC has received the 2016 Titanium Achievement Award, 2019 Platinum Achievement Award, and 2020 Platinum Achievement Award from the prestigious Presidential Mineral Industry Environment Award (PMIEA). Under Executive Order No. 399 (1997), PMIEA recognizes the exemplary practices and commitments of entities in the mining industry, which contribute to sustainable mineral development by promoting responsible management of the environment and natural resources.
